since moving to the Ring of Fire last august, i've experienced quite a few tremors, not quite full-on earthquakes, but rather little farts from the earth (relatively speaking, in the perspective of other giant earthquakes). except these farts can shake buildings. since i live in a 12-story building, i believe that the experience is a much stronger one when compared to that of people living in a little house.
well, i guess there was one full-on earthquake, a 7.1 in Honduras which we felt here in the city. most of these tremors and quakes have occurred at night, waking us from deep sleep and often causing minor personal freak-out sessions.
in case you've never experienced tremors/quakes before, here is a little sampling of what many people think during a quake (as confirmed the next day when talking to others).
1-10 seconds: mmmm why am i awake?
11-17 seconds: why is my bed moving? what is that sound? is this a quake?
18-20 seconds: this IS a quake!
21-26 seconds: what should i do!?
27-33 seconds: i guess i should put on some pants. or should i stay in bed? i'm not awake.
34-40 seconds: wait, what did they tell us to do in a quake? should we still stand in a doorway? whaet?
41-45 seconds: no, we're supposed to get under a table, close to the legs.
46-50 seconds: i might start crying now.
51 seconds: should i call home?
52+ seconds: oh, it's over.
hahaha i spent my first long(ish) quake in ca in much the same manner. meanwhile h was already braced in the doorway and wondering why i was standing in the kitchen next to all the windows and breakables...
ReplyDeletehey liv, i guess standing in doorways is now pase.... the new fad is hanging out under the table.
