like, whoa.

it's really hard to believe that i've (only) been here for about six weeks; it somehow feels like a year has already passed. just six weeks ago i suppressed a tearful goodbye at the airport, navigated the sur-reality (a real word?) of traveling by myself to guatemala and peered into the depths of my brain for any spanish to help me file a missing bag report. six weeks ago my principal picked me up at the airport (i was worried she'd leave since the missing bag report was taking sooooo long) and dropped me off at the hotel in guatemala city at 10pm. i didn't know any of the other teachers at the hotel, had a room to myself for most of the night, couldn't find the right wifi network, couldn't figure out how to call home on my cell phone, nearly bawled when i finally could and ordered room service. i also almost begged the bell boy to stay. and the room service guy.

it was a low night. a very low night.

it seems like it's so far behind me now.

now, i:
  • have started my job
  • made some fun friends
  • traveled a bit around and out of the city
  • can get a taxi, can get a pizza
  • joined a chorus
  • can ask questions at stores
  • have a kickass apartment
  • wear summer skirts and shoes most of the time
  • can even get mediocre korean food
  • have made friends with pepto bismol and tums
  • have participated in my first earthquake drill
  • and am generally having a good time.
and in the spirit of basil:
