went to the central market last saturday, and i still can't believe how cheap produce is here. all of the produce in the above shot cost Q35, which is less than $5 USD! in the states, you might be able to get one of these things for that price. i got three medium eggplants, two small non-haas avocados, a bag of green beans, a bag of rambutan (!) and two guisquil, which you'll see in the next few pictures.meet my new favorite vegetable, the guisquil or something that starts with a "p." the flavor reminds me of the mellow melons/squash used in mild chinese soups; when cooked, it almost melts into the broth and gets a bit sweet. one of the drivers says that they're great sauteed in buttah.... that's next.
aren't they cute?

this is them all dressed-up...

okay, i had a lot of fun with them...
hey that looks like this:

i'll have to try them sauteed in butter. i bought some once and did the typical asian stirfry with garlic and oil but i think i didn't cook them long enough. they seem like they need to be cooked longer than say zucchini or other veggies. maybe i'll try them again!
hahaha. that is cute!!!
ReplyDeleteare you going to be able to celebrate thanksgiving in guatemala?
